If anyone is curious, the slave it picks as a hostage is the one with the highest score according to: (<Days Owned> + <Had Sex> *3 + <Won battles> *2 + <Level> *7). For me personally, that meant won battles was heavily pushing a few into the lead. However knowing this can make it easier to adjust who the game picks.
